Cyber security and risk management for manufacturers

As more advanced technology makes its way into manufacturing- especially through IoT and cloud-based applications- manufacturers need to be fully educated on cyber risks, security and solutions.

From Infor's Manufacturing Matters Blog:

10 cyber risk precautions for manufacturers

Cyber security and risk management are important to manufacturers, but challenging to address. There are no easy answers to this growing concern.

Manufacturers must take a holistic view, starting with becoming educated about the risks and possible solutions. To help companies understand what can do about cyber risk, Deloitte and Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI) released the Cyber Risk in Advanced Manufacturing study.

“Given the highly connected environments manufacturers work in, and the pace of technological change they face, cyber risk is a top-of-mind industry issue. In fact, nearly half of the executives we surveyed lack confidence they are protected from external threats, and it is increasingly important for organizations to assess their organization’s risk profile and preparedness in the event of a breach or cyber attack,” the study reports.

An article by MAPI says, “Study results indicate nearly 40% of surveyed manufacturing companies were affected by cyber incidents in the past 12 months, and 38% of those impacted indicated cyber breaches resulted in damages in excess of $1 million.”

Are you ready to adopt cloud technology for your business?

Benefits of cloud: The case for business agility and scalability

Many companies list the top two reasons to adopt cloud technology as cost savings and improved security. These are reasons that any organization can relate to, and should.

But what about having access to a scalable "super computer" in the cloud? Scalability - the concept of accessing computing capacity on demand - is a key feature of Infor's cloud infrastructure and software platforms.

Scalability is an important consideration for many organizations, from the small manufacturer facing seasonal peak demand, to the large academic research institution supporting global initiatives. Accessing a "super computer," via cloud technologies, provides the ability to undertake processes such as forecasting, pricing, or complex science algorithms in real time. Thus outcomes are "of-the-moment," enabling faster decision making and ultimately improving customer and employee satisfaction.

Consider your company's growth strategy. If you are planning to or already have employees working globally, the ability for cloud-based applications to provide your people real-time access to information from anywhere in the world at any time is enormous. By replicating the same environment across the globe, multiple global environments remain in sync, and response time is optimized.

Infor VISUAL Tip | Creating security profiles to use as templates

Did you know you can create security profiles and use them as templates?

Security Profile templates can be used to streamline the user permission setting process.

The steps to create a security profile are:
  1. In the Security by section, click Profile.
  2. In the Profile ID field, specify an ID for the profile.
  3. Specify a description for the profile in the field to the right of the Profile ID field.
  4. Click the Language drop-down field and select the language that the profile uses.
  5. Click the Status tab and specify settings for each document type.
  6. Click the ECN Status tab and specify settings for ECNs.
  7. Click the Menu Security tab and specify which menus users with the profile can access.
  8. Click the Program Security tab and specify security settings for each program.
  9. Click the Group tab and create a group to associate with the profile.
  10. Click Save.

You can either assign a security profile to the user, or you can copy the profile settings to the user. Something to keep in mind when using the assign or copy methods, is that when you assign a profile, the user inherits the profile settings, but the settings are not copied to the user security record. So, when you view the user’s security record, the application does not display the settings inherited from the profile.

On the other hand, when you copy a profile to a user, the user inherits all of the profile settings and the settings are transferred to the user’s security record.

You can also create Group Profiles. You can copy group profile information to individual groups. All the information you specify on the group tab for the profile is copied to the individual group, including default group settings and group members. You can create a profile that contains both user security information and group information. When you apply the profile to a user or group, however, only the pertinent information will be applied.

For example, if you create a profile with both user and group information, and apply the profile to a user ID, only the Status, ECN Status, Menu Security, and Program Security information will be applied to the user.

As you can see, the process for setting up profiles is similar to the processes for setting up individual users and groups.

Infor VISUAL Tip | Print documents in a different language

Did you know that VISUAL gives you the ability to print documents for your customers in their native language?

While VISUAL obviously cannot translate your English documents to French or Spanish, it does give you the tools that allow you to automate the generation of documents in the proper language. Let's begin with the language setup itself.

In Customer Maintenance, you will find languages under the Maintain menu.

This opens a window that allows you to define the 2 character language codes that you want to use.

Now that you defined language(s), you can assign them to your customers. This is also done in Customer Maintenance. The languages available for the customers are the ones you set up in the previous step.

You can even set specific part descriptions for your parts by language. In Part Maintenance, under the Maintain menu, select Language Descriptions.

Now you have a description for your part that can be printed based on your customers' languages.

There are some additional steps, including the development of the forms themselves. However, if your company does significant business with foreign customers, it may be beneficial to see how VISUAL can accommodate form generation in other languages.

These tips were brought to you by BizTech VISUAL Consultant, Larry Tussing.
