Five Critical Steps to a Successful ERP Software Implementation

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations have often been described as changing an engine on the corporate bus...while tooling down the highway at 65.    Being able to combine people, process and technology in new ways – while maintaining momentum in the marketplace – is always difficult.  And, it has proven to be impossible for a growing number of companies who simply abandoned the efforts, often after a massive investment of time and dollars.

But the flip side of this scenario is the opportunity to leverage a speedy implementation into marketplace momentum.  It can be done…with the right partner and some careful planning.

ERP Myth or Reality?

End-users can be an obstacle to ERP success.

This is a reality! Just think about what impact the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system will have on the performance and job satisfaction of your users. Before implementation, it is wise to send a survey out to your end-users. Questions about the users’ involvement in the implementation of the ERP system, perceptions of the system implementation team, relationship with the implementation team, and the users’ satisfaction with the current business software should be asked.

Forcing a new ERP software system upon the users without first getting their input can result in many obstacles. Remember, your end-users are not robots performing a task. An ERP system shapes, and should be shaped by, its users. For ultimate success, the end-users must take ownership of the ERP and commit to fully utilizing.

ERP Selection teams need to listen, understand, acknowledge, and respond to end-user needs. By involving your end-users, they will take ownership of the ERP, thus improving the chances of implementation success.

Did you know that you can identify and eliminate invalid layers by running the Inventory Valuation report?

Negative on hand quantities are one of the most frequent causes of month-end inventory valuation issues in an Actual Cost FIFO environment.
It is advisable to identify and eliminate negative cost layers prior to running the Costing Utilities journal preparation steps.

To identify the invalid layers, run the Inventory Valuation report found under the Inventory menu. This should be done immediately after running the Inventory transaction costing step of Costing Utilities. In the Report type section, select “Show cost layer detail”. In the Cost layer detail options section, select “Show parts w/neg bal cost layers”.

Any errors appearing on this report should be rectified prior to running the Costing Utilities journal preparation steps
