Did you know that you can call VMDI Exchange from a command prompt?

That’s right – you can create an import file from your current planning tool, such as Excel, and then call VMDI Exchange using code, even from within the Excel sheet itself.

Update Visual orders, create them, and update forecasts – from within a macro, application, or VBA compatible products like Excel or Word.

VMDI Exchange can accept the normal switches in command line mode as well.

For example, to import a forecast file located at C:\Visual\EDI\ProcessingDir\, and to “Include today in proration”, you would call VMDIExchange like:

VMDIXCHG.EXE -D VMFGDEMO -U SYSADM -P SYSADM -F C:\Visual\EDI\ProcessingDir PLN0830 –I

ERP Myth or Reality?

Keeping your ERP system in sync with new technology improves business productivity.

This is a reality! As technology continues to evolve, it is important to keep your ERP Software, hardware and business systems up-to-date. If you don’t, your company could find itself backed into a ‘technological corner.’

As an example, New Microsoft Windows® Operating Systems come out every few years, and with that, Microsoft discontinues support for older versions. Companies who are running old computer systems such as Windows 98 and 2000 are at a great disadvantage and risk. With this scenario, Integration becomes difficult, newer ERP software applications may not be compatible, support may be hard to find, and those companies’ IT budgets are likely skewed toward maintaining those old systems...and those old computers are slower than molasses!

‘Productivity and Efficiency’ is the name of the game in Manufacturing. Whether on the shop floor or in the Front Office, keeping workers productive and efficient is the key to profitability.

In this economy, budgets are tight and it is not uncommon to see a great majority of budget dollars allocated to operating expenses such as Break-Fix Support and Custom Programming to keep old systems alive. Spending your IT budget on antiquated technology can delay or prevent strategic investment in the systems your company really needs! This undoubtedly restricts your organization’s ability to grow, and can certainly cut into your profits.

It’s also important to stay current with your annual software maintenance, as the updates and support will minimize downtime, optimize performance, and help your company stay competitive in the evolving marketplace.

Did you know you can use e-mail to send and receive Infor ERP VISUAL documents?

In many Infor ERP VISUAL 6.5.x Applications, you can use the “Send To” command to electronically send VISUAL documents to another licensed user to share a document. Simply use the “Send To” option in a VISUAL application, like the Manufacturing Window to send a Work Order, in Customer Order Entry to announce a big sale, or in Purchase Order Entry to Request PO approval.

The “Send To” option creates a .VMX file which contains all of the application and document information and attaches it to a blank e-mail message. The recipient will be able to double-click the file attachment to launch the VISUAL application and open the document sent (must have correct Windows file associations and access to the database).

ERP Myth or Reality?

There is no best time to implement an ERP system...

This is a reality! While certain times may seem like they would be the ‘best time’ to implement, there is no best time. You may feel like now is not the best time because a large project or order, but the reality is, prolonging the implementation only prolongs the value that the ERP system could bring to your organization. If you think that now is a bad time due to the economy, well, think again. Implementing during an economic downturn not only frees up resources available to help implement ERP effectively, but also better positions you for business growth when the economy finally recovers. The key to success is to find out how to manage the ERP Implementation and run the business at the same time.

So what are you waiting for? Download our “How to start down the ERP Selection Path” whitepaper and get started!

Did you know that you can Correct Posted Labor Tickets in VISUAL?

While you can't delete or change operation or indirect account information on a posted labor ticket in Infor ERP VISUAL, it is possible to set the hours, pieces and hourly rate to zero. This actually has the effect of voiding the ticket. A new ticket can then be entered with the correct data.

Posted by Joe Zalewski, Managing Partner and COO of BizTech

It’s an exciting time to be an Infor Channel Partner and an Infor Customer! On the heels of the recent Infor and Microsoft partnership announcement, Infor announced on October 25, 2010, that they have named Charles Phillips as chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors, effective December 1, 2010. Jim Schaper, Infor's current Chairman and CEO, will remain Chairman of the company, and continue to play a critical role in the Company's strategic development.

As an Infor ERP VISUAL Channel Partner, I am excited for my customers. As Infor continues to enhance it’s product offerings, it continues to add business value and allows my company to better serve our clients that utilize Infor Software in their business. ERP Myth or Reality?

The IT Department is responsible for the success or failure of an ERP System

This is a myth! And it couldn’t be further from the truth. The IT Department does have a defined role, however, the reality is that the success or failure of an ERP system is the responsibility of all employees. Just as “People” determine the success of an organization, “People” determine the success of an ERP System. In fact, at many manufacturing companies the two successes or failures are intertwined.

The IT Department has the responsibility of providing the end-users with an operational and well maintained system. This is true of any business. IT must properly maintain the network, the ERP Application and the Database. Other ERP responsibilities can include, but are not limited to; custom report writing, application development, client configurations and system backups.

The day-to-day operation of the ERP system indirectly or directly involves nearly every employee from Sales to Production to Finance and in between. Management must fully support the ERP initiative, stay involved and ensure the cooperation of every department. In addition, Management must define their business procedures and ERP Policies, document and communicate, and most importantly educate their end-users so that they understand their responsibility to properly use the ERP system.

No matter when the ERP software was implemented, it is an evolution and companies must continuously adjust as their business changes. At the end of the day, the end-users of the system will decide the success or failure of the ERP system.

ERP Myth or Reality?

When Selecting an ERP System, you need to consider the complete solution.

This is a reality! It’s not just about the ERP software. Certainly you want to choose an ERP System that meets your business process requirements. However, that is only part of the full solution. You need to consider how you will deliver the ERP Application to your end-users. Many times during the ERP selection process, a company will focus so much on specific software functionality that they forget to address the technology that will support the rollout to the end-users.

I’ve heard people say, “Well, we can just install everything on our existing server, and it will run, right?” Well, it depends. In most cases it would not be recommended. You will most likely need to replace or add components to your network infrastructure; and don’t expect that you can run current ERP applications on a Windows 98 PC. The point is you really need to define your requirements for application delivery to your end-users, and keep a pulse on that throughout the selection process.

Ideally, you’ll find a partner that can address both the ERP software and the technical requirements. You’ll know you have the right partner, if they can guide you through the process of defining, selecting and implementing a complete solution.

Is Your Sales Engine Due for a Tune-Up?

The sticker on my windshield tells me that I need to have my car tuned up. Actually, it told me about six weeks and 1,700 miles ago…an oversight that may cost me down the road. At least I’m not alone; I read somewhere that most people consistently fail to get their cars serviced at recommended intervals.

The same is true in business, where year after year, most companies go about their sales process without paying attention to whether it is still serving them well. And like cars, neglecting the sales engine can lead to problems.

ERP Myth or Reality?

You don’t need to define functional and business requirements before selecting an ERP software.

This is a myth! It is very important to define functional and business requirements before even thinking of selecting an ERP system. Surveys have shown that inadequate definition of functional requirements accounts for nearly 60% of ERP implementation failures. To avoid becoming part of that 60% failure club, you must develop a comprehensive, quality set of functional requirements definitions. Getting the functional and business requirements wrong could lead to the selection of an ERP package that does not fit your organization.

You can get started on the right track by creating a ‘wish list’ of what you want an ERP system to do for your company. Then, audit your current processes to identify your business-critical functionality needed in the Manufacturing ERP Software System to be implemented. Next, create a list of processes that need to be revised or replaced inside your organization. Automating with ERP is great, but you have to automate the correct processes and business practices to be successful!

Find out more tips on ERP selection by reading the white paper “How to Start Down the ERP Selection Path.”

Maintaining a Productive Workforce During a Consolidation

As the global economy fights its way out of the current recession, many companies are surviving via consolidation–streamlining business units, offices, teams, even merging with other companies. This is the type of activity that makes employees feel most insecure, and insecure employees are generally unhappy and less productive. Perhaps this decrease in employee productivity is one of the reasons that mergers have a low success rate–research shows that approximately 75 percent of mergers fail.

It’s often said that employees are a company’s greatest asset, and yet they are among the last considerations when companies institute change.

Whether a company is consolidating its own business units or merging entirely with another firm, it represents a shift in culture for employees: processes change, routines become unsettled, and positions are often eliminated. In these situations, executive leadership must make employees a priority, keeping them informed of the changes that will affect them. Changes should be made with an eye toward creating a functional, productive workforce.

Read on to find out tips for companies that are merging or streamlining operations

Five Questions to Ask About Your Sales Channel in Tough Times

Better channel management critical for many in today's climate.

In tough economic times, the increased pressure to maintain revenues and margins often reveals dangerous fault lines in your sales system that – in ordinary times – may go unnoticed.

For companies that sell through channels, these exposed fault lines can be particularly challenging to address. The inherent independence of the channel network from the company and the differences from one channel partner to the next make it harder to identify the real issues and enact the right solutions.

But it has to happen: channel-driven B-to-B companies depend on their partners for their success, and these days fault lines that are left to grow can quickly collapse the very foundations of a business. So if your channel isn’t performing the way you need it to perform, here are five questions that can help you find the right answers:

For the first time in a long while, eternal optimists aren’t the only ones who think the worst part of the recession is behind us. More than a few economic curmudgeons even think we’ve bottomed out.

If you’re ready to shift to growth mode, we have some suggestions about where to prioritize your investment dollars for maximum lift...

How to Improve Your Company’s Program Management Effectiveness

One of the largest paradigms in project and program management is the use or lack of use of the proper fundamental principles and project technology tools. This paradigm causes laborious effort to plan, track, and be proactive on project schedule, work requirements and capacity, and project costs and prevents quality performance of projects.
There are, in fact, a number of best practices that practitioners can utilize to avoid or eliminate laborious effort, simplify the project management process, and greatly improve project and program performance. This whitepaper will summarize the major best practices in five categories—schedule; resource & capacity; integration of projects in master schedules on major, complex programs; cost; and technology.

ERP Myth or Reality?

An ERP system will do anything and everything I need it to do.

This is a myth! If properly implemented, operated and maintained, most modern ERP packages are so powerful and sophisticated that they can do endless tasks; however, they do vary in the levels of complexity they can handle, and most can only handle certain functionality to varying degrees of success.

While an ERP system makes the lives of its users much easier by automating tasks, it still needs people to operate, use and maintain it. The system can only deliver the promised benefits if the employees are trained to use it, if the managers actually use the decision-making capabilities of the system and if the system is properly maintained.

While looking for the perfect ERP software package, thinking that an ERP system will take care of everything is a recipe for disaster. Therefore, when looking for a package you should make sure to define your desired business processes so that you can see the ERP package in the context of your organization’s workflows. You should see the software perform your business processes, so that you can really evaluate whether or not the package will handle the intricacies of your business.

ERP Myth or Reality?

Selecting a Manufacturing ERP Software System is just another IT Manager Decision.

It’s a Myth! Successful ERP initiatives start with the right foundation. An evaluation and decision-making structure that recognizes that ERP vendor selection is actually three decisions blended into one:

- A technical decision, based mostly on what happens at the end-user level, as well as with the IT team. Includes issues like “platform” and “integration” and “customization”.

- An operational decision, based on what the company does to fulfill customer orders.

- The ERP system must adapt easily to the customer/product/service mix, and do it without extensive or expensive modifications.

- A business decision, based on the anticipated return on investment (ROI). ERP system functionality, pricing, and vendor support capabilities vary widely, and over- or underbuying, or choosing the wrong implementation partner, can reduce ROI and consume resources otherwise available to expand the enterprise.

ERP Myth or Reality?

An ERP System Implementation Creates Job Loss

A wide-spread misconception about Manufacturing ERP Software Systems is that the implementation will cause many employees to lose their jobs due to automation. While an ERP system will automate the information flow in the organization, this does not mean that it will cause employee job loss. Without question, there will be changes to some job activities, specific processes and procedures.

For example, if the product estimator at your company currently does the quotes for new jobs in Excel, with an ERP System, the process would take place within the estimating module. Same job function with a more powerful way to get it done! Beyond that, the Quote-to-Ship process will be improved with streamlined data flow to customer order entry to the shop floor, and right on out the door.

It’s a myth! The employees of a company are the key to the success of the implementation. Change is a challenge and with everyone on board, the sky’s the limit. At the end of the day, ERP is a people system made possible by computer software and hardware.

ERP Myth or Reality?

The costs of an ERP system outweigh the benefits.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software systems come in all shapes and sizes, and can be very expensive. In addition to the software itself, the implementation can be costly, and additional people may be needed to manage the ERP Environment. An ERP system; however, is not all about costs. There are many business benefits to implementing an ERP solution, Small and Mid-sized companies included. You should perform a Cost-Benefit Analysis or Return On Investment (ROI) of the system of choice prior to making your final ERP Software Selection.

The costs of an ERP system outweigh the benefits…It’s a myth! An efficient ERP system can increase the productivity throughout an organization, shorten development cycles, streamline the production process, integrate Accounting and Financials, reduce data entry errors by automating tasks, track Job Cost information, improve customer satisfaction and much more. When the benefits of an ERP system are considered, it becomes clear that the money spent on a Manufacturing ERP Software Solution is money well spent.

ERP Myth or Reality?

ERP slows down a business

Back in the day, most business information tasks were manual and often done several times over at each level of a company. Personal computers and spreadsheets soon replaced calculators and #2 pencils. Still, many business tasks resulted in double, triple and quadruple entry. Then, along came the Enterprise Resource Planning solution. This manufacturing ERP system automated information flow across multiple departments- essentially eliminating duplication, while producing faster and more accurate results.

While it’s true of any system, “you only get out, what you put in,” with ERP, efficient input produces valuable output. From Customer Relationship Management to Shop Floor Scheduling to Shipping, an ERP system provides automated information flow throughout an organization. This integration results in better customer service, on-time delivery and ultimately improves profitability. One thing’s for sure, ERP won’t slow you down.
